| Vonnegut died April 11, which made me think to pick up this book again. Like many of us I read Vonnegut in high school. His style is charming and there’s an underlying note affirming love of life and amusement at our human condition. But there’s also a deep pessimism in his perspective, the source of which is clear in this memoire of his true experience in Dresden at the end of World War II. The science fiction fantasy, which made me laugh thirty years ago, now strikes me as a sad escape for Billy Pilgrim incurably damaged from war. |
